What is Baby Massage?
Baby massage is gentle, rhythmic stroking of the baby’s body using the hands. As part of a massage routine, you gently manipulate and oil the ankles, wrists, fingers and creases of your baby’s body, while talking softly, humming or singing to them. This helps to create a sense of calm and reassurance for your baby. There are no set minimum age for when to start baby massage. Nurturing touch should be given from birth but formal, structured massage may be too stimulating in the very early weeks for some babies. Baby massage is believed to increase a parent’s awareness of their baby’s needs and support early bonding. Parents say they find baby massage a great way of bonding with their baby.
Baby massage can result in improved sleep for both baby and parents. Baby massage can also help to improve the mother’s sense of wellbeing if she is suffering with postnatal depression or other mental health issues. Massage can improve confidence in handling a baby and parents can be better at recognising their needs, and creating positive interaction with their baby. A study in 2004 found that babies in intensive care units who were massaged spent less time in hospital, had slightly better scores on developmental tests, and slightly fewer postnatal complications.
Massage is a lovely way to bond with them. We can teach you how to massage your baby safely, so that you can enjoy this time together. Baby Massage awareness course are available through 1:1 session or group classes/workshops.
